Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by ordinary pauses in breathing for the duration of sleep. Three types of sleep apnea exist: central, obstructive and mixed. Obstructive is the most common, resulting from over-relaxation of throat muscles, causing the windpipe to collapse and block the airway. Treatments for sleep apnea range from simple lifestyle changes to surgery. One of the most mutual non-invasive treatments is the sleep apnea pillow.

A sleep apnea pillow is a pillow that is designed for snorers, since snoring is one of the most mutual indicators of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea pillows are designed to aid the neck, to prevent people who are in need of medical care from rolling onto their backs (where snoring and sleep apnea may worsen), to cradle the head, to elongate the neck and keep the tongue from blocking the airway, and to support side sleepers by relieving pressure on shoulders and arms.

Several dissimilar makers assert their sleep apnea pillows achieve the above objectives, but SONA pillow is the only sleep apnea pillow approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an over-the counter treatment.

The SONA sleep apnea pillow at initial looks rather odd. A two-layered triangle rather of a solid rectangle, this sleep apnea pillow resembles a padded boomerang more than a pillow. The angular design, though, is what makes this pillow helpful in treating sleep apnea. The shape is intended to maintain sleep in the side position. Two inclined surfaces make up the essential sleeping surface, with a flatter lower surface in the center.

Each lower portion of the triangle of the sleep apnea pillow has a training arm sling. To in the right manner use the pillow lie on either side, extend your arm in the open space under the pillow. Your arm will have to be kept extended while sleeping and the head must be maintained on the same side as the extended hand.

Initially, you may use the training arm sling to maintain this position by placing the arm in the space amid the pillow and the sling. For further and added sleep compliance, you may use a body pillow to hug over, or to put amongst the legs to help maintain the side sleeping position. Using the sleep apnea pillow in this manner allows the jaw to be pulled forward, preventing the tongue from falling backward and obstructing the throat.

Certain portions of the populations are not nominees for the SONA sleep apnea pillow. People with severe sleep apnea do not gain from using the SONA sleep apnea pillow as a solo therapy. Obese humans with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 will not get the snoring relief received by thinner members of the population.

The SONA sleep apnea pillow, like all pillows, undergoes normal wear and tear, and will have to be sporadically fluffed. The makers of SONA pillow likewise commend replacing the sleep apnea pillow annually.

Before purchasing the SONA sleep apnea pillow, or any sleep apnea pillow, consult your physician.

For a sumptuous night’s rest, the Iso-Cool pillow is made of materials that respond to a body’s altering temperature by warming or cooling. The pillow is made from Outlast Adaptive Comfort material, which has microscopic beads called PCMs (Phase Change Materials) that sense whether the body’s mean temperature is too warm or too cool. If too warm, the product absorbs heat and feels cool, and if the body’s temperature is too cool, the product releases heat and feels warm to regulate temperature. With the most eminent available concentration of PCMs, this pillow is exceedingly effective.

Available in two luxurious and supportive fills–spiral-spun polyester and visco-elastic memory foam–this model features the foam in a plush, gusseted design meant to maximize ease for those who sleep on their sides. The 300-thread-count, 100-percent-cotton cover is hypoallergenic, with a zippered closure that makes it easy to remove and wash in the home machine. The pillow provides an ample sleep surface at 21-1/2 inches long by 16 inches wide by 7 inches thick. It’s made in the USA. Iso-Cool mattress toppers are available separately.

5Hands-down the best neck aid I’ve ever had!
By I. Peters
I suffer from two herniated cervical disks and it is very difficult for me to find a pillow that is just right, not too soft, not too firm, not too low, not too high… Over the years I have tried many, numerous memory foam pillows, among them the Dream Coil pillow, the Tempurpedic, Therapedic, you name it.

All worked more or less but it seems that the main problem with most memory foam pillows is that they are too firm at firstborn (especially in the winter when it is cold in the bedroom), then mold utterly to a person’s person anatomy until the material gets too warm from the person’s body heat and ultimately it does not provide perfective support anymore because it gets too soft and allows the head to sink in too far.

Because I was a the point yet again where I was altering out my respective memory foam pillows various times a night in order to get comfortable, I was looking for just another pillow to try. Which in this case was the Iso-Cool pillow (the contoured model).

What a find! This is a veritably dissimilar pillow. For me who sleeps mainly on her side and most times awakes on her back, it strikes the perfective remainder amid support and softness. I plainly love it. It does not feel too firm in the beginning, just supportive, and it does not end up being too soft for the duration of the night, it merely remains precisely the same. That it doesn’t overheat is another perfective feature but I confess I did not buy this pillow mainly for that though it is advertised as a “stays-cool-pillow”.

I am very impressed with this pillow and may highly, highly commend it to any individual suffering from the same condition as I am.

Of course I recognise from experience that these pillows come on the market and also vanish from it quickly, so I’ve already purchased a second one and will get a few more. Just in case it will wear out one day. Because I want to keep out of the way of having to hunt down the overstocks all over the web as I had to do with the Dream Coil pillow a few years back…

UPDATE: I just received my further and added Iso-Cool contour pillows. Contrary to the one I had lately purchased at JC Penny’s, these Amazon-sold ones come without the syndication box and a thinner, substantially more basic pillow cover. The pillow cover from Penny’s is the nicer one. The one I received from Amazon does not have blue or for that matter any piping, no stitched Iso-Cool logo, rather a bit thinner fabric.

But other than as supposed or expected they seem to be made of the same material and have the same 15-yr. warranty. Just thought I’d mention that these differ a bit from other Iso-Cool pillows available out there…

UPDATE II:
In September 09 someone commented on my review here saying that Amazon now ships the pillow with the Iso-Cool cover as pictured. That’s outstanding – it’s a much nicer cover than what I got from Amazon when I introductory posted this review.

5Finally……….
By In House Chef
I cannot stand warm pillow in the middle of the night. I have been searching for the last 10+ years. I even purchased a pillow last year, mail ordered from Japan which they assert they have this “so called” heat transfer gel on the pillow, which cost me $120 and doesn’t do ANYTHING. (lesson…)

So, I came all over this Iso-Cool pillow on Amazon, I got the Contour version… I was VERY skeptical in the beginning… but once I sleep on it for the basi night, I altogether LOVE it.

1. It KEEP MY HEAD COOL, still warms up where the head contacts, but it DOES NOT warms up to a degree that annoys me (unlike one of the “original” memory form pillow which sold for $99+)
2. IT DOES NOT SINK. Again, not similar to one of those “original” memory form pillow, this one give VERY GOOD support, and it does not make my head “sink” into the pillow.
3. I purchased that kind of “water filling” pillow insert twice, and both of the time it leak after a year use. YES, it may keep my head cool, but still, the WHOLE insert will warm up after like 5-6 hours. This Iso-Cool does not keep on warming up for the duration of long hour of sleep, seems like it will stop warming up, up to sure temperature. THE BEST PART, IT WON’T LEAK…. (it is just a big block of form)

It DOES smell a little bit, like a heap of new car/chemical smell to me when I basi opened it from the package, but the smell dies down quick. Like the comment from the other user said, if the smell annoys you, I commend to let it sit in open air for perchance a few days before you use it. For me, I just employed right from the packaging.

BUT, even it sounds so amazing, but PLEASE, if possible, like myself, get one and undertake it out from a local store first, since NO ONE has the same preferences.
To me, this IS the pillow I was looking for, finally!

5Cool and keeps it is shape!
By M. Dobrick
I have been using this pillow since last Fall and it’s worked great. It regulates according to your body temperature so you never feel hot when sleeping. My house gets actually warm and having this pillow allows me to sleep and not wake up in middle the night. Plus, I’m actually hard on my pillows and this one has in truth held it is shape over the months.
