<p>The  Indian  scriptures  unequivocally  announce  that  each  soul  is  divine  and  the  extreme  intention  of  humane  life  is  to  experience  that  state  of  divinity.  They  advocate  four  dissimilar  paths,  which  are  not  mutually  exclusive  for  attaining  this  goal-the  path  of  devotion  (Bhakthi  Yoga)  the  path  of  selfless  service  (karma  Yoga),  the  path  of  intellectual  inquiry  (Jnana  yoga)  and  the  path  of  meditation  (Raja  Yoga).</p>
<p>Raja  yoga  takes  us  to  this  goal  rapidly and without delay  than  other  methods.  This  involves  stilling  the  mind  and  the  senses  so  that  we  discontinue  to  identity  ourselves  with  the  body  mind  complex  and  experience  our  unfeigned  nature.  We  commune  with  the  external  world  through  the  five  senses.  The  mind  interprets  the  impulses  from  these  senses.  Mind  is  a  bundle  of  thoughts  and  desires.  It  is  an  abstract  entity.  We  can not  catch  hold  of  the  mind.  How  then  do  we  still  the  mind?</p>
<p>The  ancient  yogis  of  India  came across  the  relation  amidst  the  mind  and  breathing.  When  a  person  is  agitated  his  breathing  becomes  more immediate  and  when  he  is  very  calm  it  is  slower.  The  yogis  revealed  that  by  controlling  the  breath  we  could  control  the  mind.  Anyone  may  experience  this  by  breathing  deeply  and  tardily  for  a  few  minutes.  The  mind  becomes  calmer  and  the  heart  rate  slower.</p>
<p>But  this  is  not  sufficient  to  altogether  still  the  mind  and  experience  our  real  nature.  In  order  to  achieve  this  it  is  necessary  to  employ  more  effective  methods.  Kriya  Yoga  (a  form  of  Raja  yoga)  is  such  a  method  which  prevents  the  electrical  impulses  from  going  out  of  the  brain  and  spinal  cord  so  that  external  world  ceases  to  subsist  as  for  as  the  person  who  is  meditating  is  concerned  enabling  him  to  experience  a  state  of  conscious  sleep.  This  state  is  dissimilar  from  natural  sleep,  which  is  involuntary.  With  continuous  exercise  a  person  will  be  capable  to  withdraw  the  life  strength  from  the  senses  at  will  and  receive pleasure from  that  state  of  bliss.</p>
<p>The  actual  technique  of  Kriya  Yoga  shall  not  be  explained  in  an  article  meant  for  popular  public.  It  produces  a  powerful  electromagnetic  field  around  the  spinal  cord  by  making  the  life  strength  move  up  and  down  the  spinal  cord.  This  field  withdraws  the  electrical  impulses  from  all  the  senses  so  that  the  soul  is  cut  off  from  the  outer  world.  In  the  most eminent  state  of  meditation  called  Samadhi,  the  person  goes  into  a  state  of  suspended  animation.  Heart  ceases  to  beat,  there  will  be  no  breathing  and  all  the  functions  of  body  come  to  a  stand  still  but  the  person  proceeds  to  be  alive.  This  may  sound  strange  for  some  humans  but  is  true.</p>
<p>It  is  primary  to  do not forget  that  one  cannot  experience  the  most eminent  state  of  yoga  within  a  short  period.  Though  the  technique  of  Kriya  Yoga  is  not  perplexed  it  takes  various  years  of  ceaseless  exercise  to  experience  the  results.</p>
<p>It  is  evenly  primary  to  grasp  that  in  order  to  progression  spiritually  one  has  to  lead  a  moral  and  disciplined  life.  If  anybody  thinks  that  he  may  commit  all  sorts  of  crimes  and  indulge  in  immoral  actions  but  still  gain  from  Kriya  Yoga  he  is  altogether  mistaken.  Those  who  are  severe  when it comes to  their  spiritual  progression  ought to  eschew  alcoholic  drinks  and  smoking  not  to  mention  any  drug  of  addiction.  It  is  highly  desirable  to  be  a  pure  vegetarian.  Consumption  of  meat  causes  sure  biochemical  changes  in  the  blood  making  it  difficult  to  control  the  mind.</p>
<p>Raja  yoga  is  a  scientific  method  of  controlling  the  mind,  reversing  the  flow  of  life  strength  and  experiencing  our  true  nature.  It  is  the  biggest  gift  India  has  given  to  the  world.  It  is  universal  in  nature.  It  does  not  interfere  with  the  religious  faith  of  anyone,  as  it  is  based  on  psycho-physiological  principles.  People  may  have  their  own  conception  of  god  and  carry on  to  carry out  any  other  rituals  of  their  religion.  Kriya  yoga  will  support  them  to  feel  the  presence  of  god  within  irrespective  of  their  conception  of  god.  Then  they  will  also  realize  that  god  defies  definition  and  conceptualization.</p>
<p>The  noesis  and  exercise  of  yoga  elevates  humanity  to  a  higher  level  and  reduces  conflicts  in  the  world.  It  will  help  ushering  in  an  era  of  peace  and  harmony. The  most  pressing  need  of  the  hour  is  the  acknowledgement  of  the  spiritual  nature  of  humane  beings  and  oneness  of  humanity.</p>

I practiced &#8220;traditional&#8221; Sleep Medicine for 20 yrs (now retired), and recognize the need for more options to help people sleep.  Inspite of knowing little about Zen, I found this book was quite readable and easy to follow. <br />The author suffered with insomnia for years, and pursued the traditional modalities and approaches with little success.  He then took &#8220;up Zen&#8221; and found it useful in resolving his insomnia!  Although the mention in the book that thinking itself interferes with sleep is well known, most of the approach to sleep and sleeplessness discussed is not something found in the Western-tradional Sleep Medicine or psychology literature.  &#8220;A Zen approach is about experiencing reality free from any distortions,&#8221; &#8220;Zen is about removing all manner of interpretation in order to replace concepts with direct experience&#8221; and finally, &#8220;there is no right way: there is only how things are, which can rarely if ever be captured by a set of beliefs&#8221; sums up the points Mr. Chiles makes that I found most useful in differentiating his approach to the techniques I practiced for years with varying success (cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, relaxation methods).  It would be confusing, and a disservice for me to try and further discuss what I &#8220;learned&#8221; from this book.  Suffice to say that I have actually followed what is suggested and found it simple, highly useful, and effective, in helping with my occasssioanl bad night of sleep! Also, I would highly recommend this book to my patients if I were still practicing Sleep Medicine.<br />&#8220;Zen and the Art of Sleep is like a compass&#8221; (pg 20), I agree; this book is a very useful guide to help everyone sleep well.</p>

Stating that sleep is not something that can be controlled and as soon as one stops trying to do so, sleep should come much easier into their lives. A new approach to a cure for insomnia, &#8220;Zen and the Art of Sleep&#8221; is something to be considered.</p>

As someone who has suffered from insomnia for at least 9 years, I have read at least 6 other books on sleep problems and this book is very good.  Although, a person does not need to have prior knowledge of Zen or Buddhism, I re-read the book after a brief survey of this ancient religion. On my second reading, the book seemed more meaningful.  I believe that a person has to remain open to the new ideas and concepts offered in in this book, regarding sleep issues.  There does not seem to be a magic bullet for insomnia (not even prescription pills) but this book is a help&#8211;just keep an open mind.   John</p>

<p>In  this  article  we  closely question or examine  the  Mahamudra  prayer  of  Tilopa  and  it is  relvance  to  astro-yogic  purification  through  buddhist  sound  healing.  Tilopa  is  addressing  his  student  Naropa  and  giving  a  pith  instruction  on  the  Buddhist  meditation  known  as  Mahamudra.  My  commentary  follows  Tilopa&#8217;s  writing  in  quotes.</p>
<p>&#8220;Homage  to  the  Vajra  Dakini!</p>
<p>Mahamudra  is  beyond  all  words  and  concepts.<br />
<br />But  for  your  sake,  O  Naropa,  my  most  committed  disciple,<br />
<br />who  is  diligent  in  ascetic  exercise  and  exertion,<br />
<br />this  shall  be  said:</p>
<p>Space  lacks  any  locality  at  all.<br />
<br />Likewise,  Mahamudra  rests  on  naught.<br />
<br />Thus,  without  making  effort,  abide  in  the  pure  primordial  state,<br />
<br />and  the  fetters  that  bind  you  will  plainly  drop  away.&#8221;</p>
<p>The  wondrous  thing  with regards to  sound  healing  is  that  it  requires  little  or  no  venture  on  the  share  of  the  recipient.  The  idea  is  to  use  the  fruit  of  years  of  meditation  exercise  on  the  part  of  the  sound  healer  to  impart  gain  to  the  listener.  The  relaxation  experienced  may  be  likened  to  an  intensified  meditation  experience  very  much  like  Mahamudra.  There  is  no  reference  point  when  one  is  immersed  in  sound,  just  as  &#8220;Space  lacks  any  locality  at  all.  .  .&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Just  as  when  looking  into  the  open  sky,<br />
<br />fixed  conceptions  of  centre  and  circumference  dissolve,<br />
<br />So,  if  with  mind  one  perceives  the  mind,  mental  action  ceases;  then  is  it,  that  Enlightened-mind  is  realized.</p>
<p>Clouds  that  arise  and  take  form  in  the  sky,<br />
<br />pass  away  rather  mechanically  according  to  natural  law.<br />
<br />Likewise,  the  flow  of  conceptions  arising  in  the  mind,<br />
<br />naturally  pass  away  when  mind  grasps  mind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Listening  to  intentional  music,  music  that  is  developed  to  gain  the  listener  by  meditation  adepts  may  create  the  experience  for  the  listener  where  all  thoughts  dissolve,  and  in  a  moment  the  listener  may  have  the  experience  of  their  mind  perceiving  it is  own  true  nature.</p>
<p>&#8220;Space  has  neither  shape  nor  colour;<br />
<br />it  is  changeless,  and  not  tinged  by  either  white  or  black.<br />
<br />Likewise,  mind-in-itself  has  neither  form  nor  colour,<br />
<br />nor  may  it  be  stained  by  virtue  or  vice.</p>
<p>The  burning  stellar  radiance  of  the  sun<br />
<br />can  not  be  covered  by  the  eternal  darkness  of  space.<br />
<br />Likewise  the  luminous  essence  of  mind<br />
<br />can  not  be  shrouded  by  Samsara&#8217;s  endless  duration.&#8221;</p>
<p>The  purity  of  healing  sound  has  the  same  qualities.  Sound  is  actually  light  given  form,  vibration  that  for  numerous  listeners  genuinely  become  fleeting  visions  of  colors.  This  is  an  clear or deep perception  into  the  mystery  of  Buddhist  sound  healing.  Though  one  may  close  one&#8217;s  eyes,  through  the  mysterious  power  of  intentional  sound,  concealed  worlds  once  imperceptible  are  revealed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Though  we  say  that  space  is  empty,<br />
<br />the  actual  nature  of  this  vacuity  defies  description.<br />
<br />Though  we  say  that  mind  is  Clear  Light,<br />
<br />it  is  in truth  beyond  all  words  and  concepts.<br />
<br />In  that  mind  is  like  space,  it  encompasses  all.<br />
<br />Therefore  discontinue  with  bodily  motion  and  sit  relaxed;<br />
<br />close  your  mouth  and  merely  stay  in  silence;<br />
<br />empty  your  mind  and  leap  beyond  the  phenomenal!</p>
<p>Let  the  body  rest  at  ease,  insubstantial  like  a  hollow  bamboo.<br />
<br />Let  the  mind  rest  in  itself,  spacious  and  un-preoccupied  with  thought.<br />
<br />When  the  mind  is  not  possessed  by  aims,  that  is  Mahamudra.<br />
<br />When  this  is  realized,  that  is  Great  Enlightenment!&#8221;</p>
<p>Likewise,  when  one  altogether  immerses  oneself  in  sound,  with  an  intent  to  free  one&#8217;s  mind  from  discursive  thoughts,  the  gains  are  enlightening.  The  blessed  relief  one  experiences  is  astounding  in  that  it  requires  no  effort.  When  one  allows  themselves  to  be  relaxed,  applying  no  effort,  merely  resting  in  the  subtle  calibers  of  sound,  they  grant  themselves  to  rest  at  ease,  mind  resting  in  itself.  Concentration  on  sound  allows  this  state  to  be  realized  with  no  effort.</p>
<p>&#8220;Adherents  of  shamanic  ritual  and  of  the  Mahayana,<br />
<br />of  the  Vinaya  and  Sutra,  and  the  followers  of  the  Religions,<br />
<br />with  all  their  respective  scholastic  theologies  and  devotions,<br />
<br />have  no  idea  how  marvelous  is  the  innate  Mahamudra.<br />
<br />For  them,  the  light  is  concealed  by  the  very  act  of  seeking  to  know  it.&#8221;</p>
<p>No  crusade  is  important  here.  The  very  act  of  seeking,  of  attempting  to  comprehend  mind,  blocks  one  from  in truth  experiencing  it.  The  beauty  of  astro-yogic  purification  through  Buddhist  sound  healing  is  that  it  requires  no  effort.  As  the  Christian  mystic  Meister  Eckhardt  wrote,  &#8220;When  thought  is  gone,  God  gets  in.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;As  to  the  keeping  of  covenant-vows  (samaya),  they  are  broken<br />
<br />by  the  very  act  of  attempting  to  cohere  to  them.<br />
<br />Cease  with  rules  and  ritual,  abandon  volition,  stray  not  from  the  Ultimate,  and  then  a  true  Precept-keeper  will  you  be,  a  lamp  illuminating  the  darkness.<br />
<br />Not  caught  up  in  perceptions,  nor  caught  in  desire,<br />
<br />seeking  nothing,  abiding  in  the  self  alone,  one  merely  lets<br />
<br />consciousness  be,  like  a  wave  in  the  Great  Ocean.&#8221;</p>
<p>By  freeing  oneself  from  discursive  thoughts,  permitting  the  sound  to  be  the  focus  of  one&#8217;s  attention,  for  a  few  blissful  moments  our  cognizance  is  like  a  wave  in  the  Great  Ocean  of  Mind.</p>
<p>&#8220;If  you  slip  not  into  conation,  if  you  hold  to  neither  this  nor  that,<br />
<br />the  real  meaning  behind  all  the  Scriptures,  will  make  itself  clear.<br />
<br />Just  abiding,  one  is  freed  from  the  prison  of  Samsara.<br />
<br />Just  abiding,  all  one&#8217;s  karmic  impurities  are  burned  away.<br />
<br />It  is  then  that  you  shall  be  known  as  a  &#8220;Lamp  of  the  Teaching&#8221;.</p>
<p>Even  the  ignorant  who  comprehend  not  Mahamudra,<br />
<br />and  fools  who  are  lost  for  a  time  in  Samsara,<br />
<br />can  be  saved  if  they  but  rely  on  a  holy  Lord  (guru).<br />
<br />Through  grace  (adhisthana)  they  may  be  sure  of  deliverance.&#8221;</p>
<p>The  beauty  of  Tibetan  Buddhism  is  that  the  monasteries  have  been  enlightenment  machines,  burning  away  karmic  impurities.  By  practicing  Buddhist  sound  healing,  we  are  blessed  by  our  connection  to  the  one  thousand  years  of  unbroken  lineage.  The  sounds  we  fabricate  with  mantra  connect  us  with  the  Gurus&#8217;  wisdom  and  compassion.  Surrendering  to  the  power  of  sound  becomes  grace  in  action,  compassionateness  in  action.</p>
<p>&#8220;Know  all  the  phenomena  of  Samsara  as  worthless;<br />
<br />just  the  cause  of  attachment  and  aversion.<br />
<br />All  invented  phenomena  are  without  real  substance,<br />
<br />therefore  seek  rather  the  nature  of  the  Ultimate.</p>
<p>Non-duality  is  the  King  of  Views.<br />
<br />Resting  the  mind  without  flux  is  the  King  of  Meditations.<br />
<br />Not  choosing  this  or  that  is  the  King  of  Conduct.<br />
<br />When  there  is  neither  hope  nor  fear,  that  is  the  King  of  Results.</p>
<p>Once  you  let  go  of  all  objects-of-perception,<br />
<br />the  true  nature  of  the  mind  shines  forth.<br />
<br />Not  attempting  to  meditate  is  the  supreme  path  of  the  Buddha.<br />
<br />By  the  meditation  of  non-meditation  Enlightenment  is  won.</p>
<p>Alas!  Impermanent  is  this  world.<br />
<br />It  is  like  a  mirage  or  a  dream.<br />
<br />Even  the  illusion  of  it is  existence<br />
<br />is  not  something  that  exists.</p>
<p>Therefore,  abandon  worldly  pre-occupations,  caste  and  position,<br />
<br />and  meditate  alone  in  forest,  mountains  and  solitary  places.<br />
<br />Abide  without  seeking;  loosely  remaining  in  the  natural  state.<br />
<br />By  attaining  non-attainment,  speedily  shalt  thou  reach  the  state  of  Mahamudra.</p>
<p>If  you  sever  the  main  root  of  a  living  tree,<br />
<br />then  all  the  a heap of  sectionalizations  wither  and  die  at  once.<br />
<br />Cut  through  (kathinaccheda)  the  very  root  of  consciousness,<br />
<br />and  all  mental  projections  will  without delay  cease.</p>
<p>The  darkness  of  long  ages  is  dispelled<br />
<br />instantly  by  the  lighting  of  a  single  lamp.<br />
<br />One  moment&#8217;s  experience  of  the  mind  of  Clear  Light<br />
<br />immediately  rends  the  veil  of  ignorance  for  ever.</p>
<p>Aha!  That  which  is relevant to  to  knowingness  is  unable  to  comprehend  transcendental  Gnosis  (jnana).<br />
<br />That  which  appertains  to  developed  phenomena  is  unable  to  comprehend  the  uncreate  Reality.<br />
<br />If  you  would  attain  the  transcendent,  beyond  knowingness  and  creation;<br />
<br />then  look  directly  into  one&#8217;s  own  mind,  until  consciousness  is  revealed  in  it is  bare  nakedness.</p>
<p>Let  the  polluted  pool  of  mental  action  clear  itself.<br />
<br />Merely  watch  the  flow,  just  as  it  is.<br />
<br />Do  not  engage  with  appearances  as  they  arise,<br />
<br />for  Mahamudra  is  beyond  acceptance  and  rejection.</p>
<p>Since  the  rudimentary  ground  (alaya)  is  unborn,<br />
<br />it  may  neither  be  obscured  nor  defiled.<br />
<br />Just  rest  in  the  unborn  state,  neither  meditating  nor  not-meditating,  letting  appearances  resolve  back  into  Ultimate  Reality  (dharmata).</p>
<p>In  being  free  of  the  extremes,  one  attains  the  King  of  Views.<br />
<br />Entering  the  immense  and  deep,  one  attains  the  King  of  Meditations.<br />
<br />Not  making  an  effort,  one  attains  the  King  of  Conduct.<br />
<br />In  non-seeking  awareness,  one  attains  the  King  of  Results.</p>
<p>At  initial  the  yogi  feels  his  mind  to  be  turbulent,<br />
<br />like  the  upper  course  of  a  rushing  mountain  torrent.<br />
<br />Then  it  becomes  smooth  like  the  wide  river  Ganges.<br />
<br />In  the  end  it  is  like  entering  the  ocean,  a  child  returning  to  the  mother.</p>
<p>One  who  wishes  to  attain  this  level  of  meditation<br />
<br />should  primary  begin  by  practicing  remembrance  of  the  breath.<br />
<br />Through  control  of  the  look with fixed eyes  and  such  exercises,<br />
<br />the  mind  will  be  disciplined  until  it  abides  in  it is  own  state.</p>
<p>Now  concerning  the  exercise  of  Karmamudra,<br />
<br />the  union  of  Wisdom  (prajna)  and  Means  (upaya):<br />
<br />draw  down  and  blend,  then  raise  it  up  to  the  source.<br />
<br />Finally  cause  it  to  saturate  the  entire  body.<br />
<br />If  this  is  performed  free  of  lust,  then  Bliss-Emptiness  is  attained.</p>
<p>Glowing  inwardly,  blessed  with  renewed  vigour  and  vitality,<br />
<br />thy  life-power  shall  exaggerate  like  the  waxing  moon.<br />
<br />Radiant  and  healthy,  with  the  equanimity  of  a  lion,<br />
<br />thou  shalt  attain  Accomplishment  (siddhi),  both  routine  and  supreme.</p>

<p>By  virtue  of  entering  this  practice,  may  all  obstacles  to  the  realization  of  Mahamudra  dissolve  away.<br />
<br />May  the  Clear  Light  of  Mahamudra  dawn  in  the  minds  of  the  practitioners.<br />
<br />May  this  Pith  Instruction  on  Mahamudra  come  to  abide  in  the  hearts  of  those  disciples  fortunate  to  connect  with  it.</p>
<p>This  pith-instruction  on  Mahamudra  in  28  Verses  was  given  by  Sri  Tilopa  to  Mahapandita  Nadapada  on  the  banks  of  the  Ganges  River.  It  was  translated  into  Tibetan  from  the  Sanskrit  by  Marpa  Cho-kyi-lodro,  and  is  now  staged  in  English.  The  origial  text  may  be  found  in  the  Do.ha.  mdzod.  brgyad.  ces.bya.ba.  phyag.  rgya.  chen.  po&#8217;i.  man.ngag.  gsal.bar.  ston.pa&#8217;i.  gzhung.,  printed  at  the  Rumtek  monastery  of  His  Holiness  the  Gyalwa  Karmapa,  in  Sikkhim.</p>

<p>When  it  comes  to  Meditation  we  will have to  have  an  open  mind  and  make  a  commitment  if  we  want  change  in  our  lives.  When  people  think  of  meditation  they  ofttimes  think  of  religion  or  they  think  of  it  as  a  waste  of  time.  But  meditation  is  the  extreme  skill  of  patience,  which  gives  peace  and  calm  to  our  minds,  bodies,  and  then  to  our  lives.</p>
<p>Stress  causes  a  racing  mind  of  worry  and  fear,  which  is  normally  on  autopilot.  When  on  autopilot  we  display  not wanted  emotions  like  anger,  irritability,  and  moodiness.  When  our  mind  is  noisy  we  are  unable  to  fall  asleep,  stay  asleep,  and  get  necessary  hours  of  sleep.  Other  thoughts  that  may  cause  disorder  in  our  mind  and  lives  are  of  what  we  don&#8217;t  have,  peoples&#8217;  offenses,  the  need  to  control  other  people,  or  lack  of  faith  in  ourselves.  These  stressful  thoughts  manifest  into  physical  sensations or changes  and  cause  muscle  tension  and  stiffness.</p>
<p>A  standard  meditation  technique  to  help  remedy  all  of  the  above  brought up  is  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation,  which  is  most  effective  if  done  everyday.  When  we  learn  the  technique  of  deep  relaxation  and  do  it  often  sufficient  we  will  manufacture  a  habit  of  being  conscious  of  our  tension  and  stiffness  allround  the  day.  In  other  words,  we  become  more  conscious  and  in  tuned  with  our  mind  and  body.  This  habit  allows  us  to  fetch  ourselves  to  a  relaxed  and  calm  state  anyplace  at  anytime.</p>
<p>The  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation  will have to  be  done  every day  to  construct  the  habit  brought up  above.  The  best  time  to  do  this  is  right  before  you  go  to  sleep  so  that  you  may  invent  an  intentional  deep  sleep  and  if  you  have  difficultness  sleeping  this  will  also  support  improve  your  rest  in  the  evening.  On  the  whole,  we  may  gain  from  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation  if  done  two  to  three  times  a  day.  This  technique  may  be  done  in  5  to  10  minutes.</p>
<p>The  best  way  to  learn  this  exercise  is  with  an  instructive  audio.  After  listening  once  or  twice  it  will have to  be  very  easy  to  facilitate  on  your  own.  A  good  audio  will  instruct  you  to  commence  in  a  comfortable  position  with  deep  breathing  exercises.  Then  the  audio  will  fetch  you  through  a  routine  of  relaxing  each  portion  of  your  body.  Not  only  does  this  relax  your  body  it  likewise  relaxes  your  mind  because  you  take  yourself  out  of  your  thoughts  and  into  the  focus  of  the  senses  in  the  body.</p>
<p>This  exercise  has  the  gain  of  freeing  physical  strain,  quieting  the  mind,  giving  the  participant  peace,  and  it  allows  you  a  spiritual  space.  When  your  mind  is  quiet  and  your  body  is  relaxed  you  will  better  be  capable  to  listen  that  still  little  voice.  Learn  to  do  a  Daily  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation  and  you  will  be  an  expert  at  destressing  yourself  and  creating  pleasure  in  your  life.</p>

<p>All  of  us  are  taking part  either  conscious  or  unaware.  in  a  quantum  shift  bringing  at  times,  tumultuous  changes  in  all  areas  of  our  society  and  world  structures.  No  one  is  immune  from  the  effects  these  rapid  changes  bring. Some  may  want  physical  or  mental  relief,  others,  answers  or  directions  for  a  better  life.  Either  way,  selections  are  without doubt or question  individualized.  Find  yours  since  this  goes  a  long  way  in  helping  you  along  the  path  aided  with  a  unique,  individualized  purpose.  Define  it  for  you!  To  start out  a  meditation,  a  few  simple  rules  are  universally  accepted.  These  in general  are-</p>
<p>1)  Break  away  from  distractions.  Turn  off  the  outside  electrical/technological  intrusions  like  phones,  computers,  TV&#8217;s  etc.  A  quiet,  calm  peaceful  place  is  preferred.  At  first,  commit  10  minutes  or  more  with  no  interruption.</p>

Normally  a  seated  position  on  the  ground  is  preferent  with  hands  in  your  lap;  it  may  likewise  be  done  in  a  chair.  Lying  down  initially  is  not  suggested  as  you  body  may  assume  a  sleep  mode.</p>
<p>3)  Close  your  eyes  gently,  relax  your  jaw  and  facial  muscles.  Do  a  &#8220;body  scan&#8221;  looking  for  any  muscle  tension  that  may  subsist  freeing  any  found. Remind  yourself  to  observe  and  be grateful for  the  beneficial  by-products  you  have  regained.</p>

<p><strong><em>Science  of  Meditation&#8217;s  Magic</em></strong></p>

<p><em><strong>What  is  Happening  In  your  Brain  During  Meditation?</strong></em></p>

Even  persons  meditating  for  the  basi  time  will  register  a  decrease  in  beta  waves,  a  sign  that  the  cortex  is  not  processing  selective information  as  actively  as  usual.  After  their  basi  20-minute  session,  persons who requires medical care  show  a  marked  decrease  in  beta-wave  activity.</p>
<p><em><strong>Consciousness  Directs  Matter</strong></em></p>

<p>Interestingly  sufficient  in  the  book,  Mr.  Hill  did  not  expressly  disclose  the  step-by-step  procedure  to  invent  circumstances  which  aligned  with  ones  invocation  of  a  positive  mental  attitude.  He  left  that  for  the  reader  to  discover.  However,  he  did  provide  clues  and  examples  which  he  documented  through  interviewing  over  500  successful  persons  while  researching  his  firstborn  course  study  titled:  The  Law  of  Success.  He  went  on  to  describe  this  idea  as  a  &#8220;Definite  Major  Purpose&#8221;  in  order  for  the  reader  to  be  challenged  and  ask  the  question-  In  what  do  I  genuinely  believe?  His  philosophical  perspective  was  that  98%  of  persons  had  no  firm  beliefs  leading  them  to  be  handicapped  in  achieving  what  they  want  in  life.  So  yes,  change  your  thoughts,  alter  your  world.</p>
<p>I  mention  Mr.  Hill  because  he  distinctly  proved  the  sheer  power  of  deliberate  thought  to  develop  your  desired  life.  And  this  approach  succinctly  aligns  with  the  infinite  possiblenesses  afforded  in  meditation.  Just  as  a  professional  stage  hypnotist  may  temporarily  manipulate  someone&#8217;s  activenesses  by  accessing  and  placing  suggestions  in  a  special  place  within  their  psyche,  similar  gateways  or  modified  states  of  cognizance  are  possible  for the duration of  meditation.  Our  subconscious  minds  cannot  distinguish  amongst  the  physical  &#8220;reality&#8221;  we  are  witnessing  and  plainly  bright  thought  projections.  It  is  here  that  for the duration of  sure  meditative  states  one  may  interject  desired  images  powered  by  emotions,  or  predefined  affirmations  by  deliberately  focusing  intent,  expediting  their  arrival  in  the  physical.</p>

Of  course,  meditation  is  not  directly  mentioned,  only  alluded  to,  but  distinctly  meditation  accelerates  this  entire  originative  routine  by  reducing  immune  thoughts  which  hinder  progress. Just  think,  this  is  only  breaths  away!</p>
<p>As  our  socioeconomic  landscape  is  now  being  radically  redefined  as  we  step  further  away  from  a  principally  consumerism  driven  lifestyle,  meditation  may  play  a  substantial  role  in  this  era  helping  us  to  become  more  balanced  and  grounded.  Many  are  awakening  to  the  fact  that  a  life  based  solely  material  gain  to  achieve  a  state  of  pleasure  is  fraught  with  dangers  and  distorts  real,  lasting  values.  Material  affluence  is  not  a  problem,  but  attempting  to  live  a  life  where  that  is  the  important  focus  distances  us  further  from  our  higher  nature.  We  have  a great deal of  selections  demanding  our  time  and  attention  today,  to  sacrifice  a  critical  action  like  meditation  which  could  modify  and  improve  your  life  beyond  where  you  find  yourself  now,  would  be  a  tragedy.</p>

Effective  for  persons  who  need  a  viable  method  for  relaxation,  there  are  some  who  use  tapes  or  CDs  of  Yoga  Nidra.  These  persons  have  no  other  cognition  of  yoga  or  meditation.</p>
<p>There  are  instances  when  humans  complain  to  me  saying  that  they  plainly  may  not  relax,  no  matter  what  they  do.  Inevitably,  these  people  have  tried  methods  of  relaxation,  where  they  have  to  perpetually  imagine  that  they  have  to  relax.  At  the  end  of  such  an  exercise,  it  is  no  wonder  that  the  person  is  frustrated  and  irritated  at  not  being  capable  to  derive  any  gain  from  relaxation,  having  to  spend  so  much  crusade  and  energy  to  achieve  his  goal.</p>
<p>Yoga  Nidra  is  one  yogic  exercise  where  you  are  never  instructed  to  relax.  My  personal  experience  shows  that  people,  who  have  had  troubles  relaxing  earlier,  have  derived  quick  gains  from  this  practice.</p>
<p>While  it  is  an  easy  procedure  for  relaxation  for  beginners,  it  is  evenly  usual  with  school  children  and  the  elderly.  It  is  highly  valued  at  work  places.</p>
<p>There  is  not one thing  as  good  as  Yoga  Nidra  to  improve  your  concentration,  revival  of  energy  and  resting  the  frayed  nerves.  You  may  exercise  Yoga  Nidra  any  time  you  want.  This  has  a  very  good  effect  on  your  sleep  specially  if  you  have  difficulties  with  your  sleep.</p>
<p>When  you  exercise  Yoga  Nidra,  listen  to  the  instructions  without  making  any  overt  effort  or  using  any  mental  strength  to  do  what  you  are  doing.  Follow  what  you  are  told  to  do  with  ease,  interest  and  awareness.  The  rest  takes  care  of  itself.</p>
<p>When  you  get started  to  exercise  Yoga  Nidra,  probabilities  are  that  you  might  go  off  to  sleep,  which  is  perfectly  in  order,  even though  the  intention  is  to  stay  awake  and  aware.  For  numerous  time  you  just  may  not  follow  the  instructions.  You  think  you  have  fallen  asleep,  yet  you  stay  conscious.  While  falling  asleep  is  a  transitional  event,  with  exercise  you  would  gradually  stay  present  and  conscious  in  a  deep  state  of  consciousness.</p>
<p>To  get  the  best  results  from  Yoga  Nidra,  it  is  commended  that  you  lie  down  with  your  head  pointing  towards  the  north.  Wear  loose  fitting  clothes  and  lie  down  on  an  even  floor  rather  of  a  over-soft  mattress,  etc.  In  case  you  find  that  you  are  likely  to  go  off  to  sleep,  keep  your  hands  and  feet  uncovered  or  better  still,  and  lie  down  with  out  any  cover  on  your  body.  If  you  still  tend  to  fall  asleep,  you  need  to  rest  your  elbows  on  the  floor  with  your  forearms  pointing  upwards.  This  will  prevent  you  from  falling  asleep  as  each  time  you  do  so,  your  forearms  will  drop  on  the  floor  and  you  would  wake  up.</p>
<p>The  goal to be attained  of  Yoga  Nidra,  as  with  each  other  form  of  real  meditation  is  to  achieve  consciousness  which  rests  in  itself.  Thoughts,  dreams  and  events  may  surface  for the duration of  yoga  nidra  exercise  which  takes  you  back  in  time  with  memories  flooding  your  consciousness.  When  these  things  occur  &#8211;  do  not  stick  to  any  thought,  merely  let  them  come  and  pass.  Do  not  be  judgmental  with regards to  any  thought,  person  or  event  also.  When  you  let  your  thoughts  and  emotions  come  and  go  with  ease  and  calmness,  you  are  freeing  your  mind  of  all  impressions  and  reaching  a  genuinely  relaxed  state.  Imagine  your  mind  to  have  some  open  windows  from  where  thoughts  come  and  may  without delay  disappear,  gradually  making  space  for  inspiration.</p>

On  a  recent  cross  country  (USA)  drive  of  a heap of  2,300  miles,  I  substituted  normal  sleeping  with  Yoga  Nidra  (deep  sleep)  and  made  the  trip  in  51  elapsed  hours. <p>Stress  causes  a  racing  mind  of  worry  and  fear,  which  is  ordinarily  on  autopilot.  When  on  autopilot  we  display  not wanted  emotions  like  anger,  irritability,  and  moodiness.  When  our  mind  is  noisy  we  are  unable  to  fall  asleep,  stay  asleep,  and  get  necessary  hours  of  sleep.  Other  thoughts  that  may  cause  disorder  in  our  mind  and  lives  are  of  what  we  don&#8217;t  have,  peoples&#8217;  offenses,  the  need  to  control  other  people,  or  lack  of  faith  in  ourselves.  These  stressful  thoughts  manifest  into  physical  sensations or changes  and  cause  muscle  tension  and  stiffness.</p>
<p>A  ordinary  meditation  technique  to  support  remedy  all  of  the  above  brought up  is  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation,  which  is  most  effective  if  done  everyday.  When  we  learn  the  technique  of  deep  relaxation  and  do  it  oftentimes  sufficient  we  will  develop  a  habit  of  being  conscious  of  our  tension  and  stiffness  allround  the  day.  In  other  words,  we  become  more  conscious  and  in  tuned  with  our  mind  and  body.  This  habit  allows  us  to  fetch  ourselves  to  a  relaxed  and  calm  state  anyplace  at  anytime.</p>
<p>The  Deep  Relaxation  Meditation  ought to  be  done  each day  to  invent  the  habit  cited  above.  The  best  time  to  do  this  is  right  before  you  go  to  sleep  so  that  you  may  invent  an  intentional  deep  sleep  and  if  you  have  difficultness  sleeping  this  will  likewise  aid  improve  your  rest  in  the  evening. Flores<br />Deep Sleep subliminal CD<br />I am so addicted to this that I have to listen to this every evening even if I have a good day!<br />My work and personal life are extremely stressful and not being able to relax and sleep was adding unbearable stress. If I did manage to get to sleep I&#8217;d wake up a few hours later and pretty much be awake the rest of the night. I thought I would lose my mind before I found a healthy solution that didn&#8217;t include using pills. I didn&#8217;t want to get into a nasty cycle of a pill to go to sleep then a pill to wake up, etc&#8230;<br />Sometimes the cd takes just a few minutes and sometimes a little longer but I know it will work so I don&#8217;t stress. If I wake up in the middle of the night I have no problem getting back to sleep but if I feel like it might be a problem I plug in and go back to sleep with it. Best of all I finally feel like I am getting a healthy dose of sleep and have a general sense of peace that wasn&#8217;t there before. With Kelly Howell&#8217;s CD I am able to not only fall asleep quickly but stay asleep and wake refreshed.  It is a perfect sleep tool.  Somewhere in my travels I lost my copy and this is the second CD for me because I rely on it from time to time.  I have also recently ordered several other Kelly Howell CDs and am equally happy with them as well.  I hate to sound like a paid commercial. You&#8217;ve  gained  10  lbs  over  the  holidays,  your  hair  looks  dull,  you  have  no  energy  and  your  skin  is  in regards to  as  radiant  as  an  old  boot!  Don&#8217;t  worry,  all  you  need  is  a  good  cleanse.</p>
<p>Ayurveda,  the  mother  of  all  natural  healing  systems,  tells  us  that  proper  digestion  is  indispensable  to  staying  healthy.  When  our  digestive  fire  or  &#8220;agni&#8221;  is  working  properly,  all  of  the  feed  we  eat  is  either  converted  into  nutrients  for  absorption  into  the  body,  or  flushed  out  as  waste.  If  the  digestive  routine  is  not complete  or  inefficient,  partially  digested  feed  matter  is  left  behind  in  the  digestive  system.  This  substance  turns  into  toxins,  known  as  &#8220;ama&#8221;  in  Ayurveda.    If  permitted  to  stay  in  the  body  or  build  up  over  time  it  will  disrupt  the  natural  flow  of  energies  within  the  body  and  impairment of normal physiological function  will  ultimately  manifest,  there  will  be  weight  gain,  as  well  as  low  energy  levels.  If  not  dealt  with  immediately,  it  will  become  a  vicious  circle  of  poor  digestion,  ama  build  up  and  low  immunity  etc.  Ama  is  a  fertile  ground  for  contagions  and  disorders  to  germinate,  take  root  and  flourish.</p>
<p>So  how  do  we  know  when  things  just  aren&#8217;t  working  properly?  Well,  Christmas  is  a  prime  example.  Our  routines  are  blown.  We  oftentimes  eat  at  times  we  would  normally  not  eat  and  we  eat  too  much.  The  digestive  procedure  leaves  behind  toxins  either  when  you  eat  foods  that  are  not  fresh,  natural  or  suitable  to  your  constitution  and  digestive  capability,  or  when  you  follow  eating  routines  and  exercises  that  are  not  ideal.  Eating  processed  or  artificially  flavored  foods  and  foods  that  are  grown  with  chemical  pesticides  and  fertilizers  may  lead  to  toxin  build-up.  Drinking  iced  water  or  ice-cold  beverages  douses  the  digestive  fire  and  causes  ama  to  be  generated.  Eating  heavier  foods  after  sundown,  eating  when  we  haven&#8217;t  finished  digesting  the  former  meal,  eating  when  stressed  will  all  cause  difficulties  for  our  digestion.</p>
<p>Too  a great deal of  toxins?  How  to  tell.</p>
<p>If  you  experience  three  or  more  of  these  ordinary  indications  you  may  have  an  accumulation  of  toxins  in  your  system.  You  would  in all likelihood  gain  from  a  cleansing  regime.</p>
<p>
<ul>
<li>There  is  a  white  coating  on  your  tongue  basi  thing  in  the  morning.</li>
<li>After  a  main  meal  you  feel  actually  tired  and  just  want  to  curl  up  and  snooze.</li>
<li>Your  energy  levels  are  genuinely  low  and  you  feel  tired  and  lethargic  all  day  long,  even  even though  you  eat  well  and  sleep  well.</li>
<li>Your  appetite  is  poor  or  you  crave  junk  foods.</li>
<li>You  feel  &#8220;spaced  out&#8221;,  lack  exuberance  and  your  mind  is  cloudy.</li>
<li>You  experience  abdominal  bloating  and  gas,  peculiarly  after  a  main  meal.</li>
<li>You  feel  heavy  and  congested  or  constipated.</li>
<li>You  have  a  popular  sense  of  malaise,  with  vague  aches  and  pains.</li>
</ul>
<p>The  Cleansing  Process</p>
<p>In  Ayurveda  &#8220;Pancha  Karma&#8221;  cleanse  and  rejuvenation  is  normally  done  with  the  modify  of  seasons.  It  was  in the first place  devised  for  the  well  to  do  and  royalty  in  India  to  prolong  life  and  health.  Today,  a lot of  persons  from  all  walks  of  life  commit  to  Pancha  Karma  once  a  year  for  sickness  preventative action  and  to  transform  and  grow  in an emotional manner  and  spiritually. One  to  three  weeks  before  the  actual  cleansing  sure  foods  and  drinks  are  eliminated.  The  body  is  massaged  with  warm  oils  to  loosen  toxins  in  the  tissues  and  heat  therapies  such  as  steam  are  used  to  liquefy  the  toxins  and  move  them  back  into  the  digestive  track.  </li>
<li><u>Stage  2</u>:      Pancha  Karma,  the  purification  phase  &#8211;  Ayurveda  uses  proficiencies  such  as  fasting  or  cleansing  herbs,  chanting,  yoga,  breathing,  purging  and  herbalized  enemas  for the duration of  pancha  karma  for  cleansing  toxins  out  of  the  body,  mind  and  emotions.  What  is  applied  will  depend  on  the  individual&#8217;s  constitution.</li>
<li><u>Stage  3</u>:    Rasayana  or  rejuvenation  phase  &#8211;  During  the  rejuvenation  phase,  Ayurveda  gives  healing  herbs,  tonics  and  high  quality  foods.</li>
</ul>
<p>Obviously,  we  cannot  all  spend  the  time  or  cash  to  have  a  full  Pancha  Karma  treatment.  So  I  have  put  together  a  simple  Ayurvedic  cleanse  you  may  do  at  home,  and  you  don&#8217;t  have  to  wait  until  the  spring  either.</p>
<p>At  home  &#8220;mini&#8221;  pancha  Karma  cleanse:</p>
<p>
<ul>
<li><u>Stage  1</u>:    For  one  week  eliminate  from  your  diet  all  foods  that  may  invent  ama.  This  includes  leftovers,  foods  with  preservatives,  additives  or  chemicals,  and  foods  grown  in  an  surroundings  laced  with  chemical  fertilizers  or  pesticides,  and  canned,  frozen  or  processed  foods.  Eliminate  junk  foods  from  your  diet.  No  desserts,  no  meats  and  cheeses,  deep-fried  foods,  chocolate,  white  sugar,  carbonated  drinks,  caffeine,  alcohol  and  nicotine.  Minimize  breads  made  with  yeast  and  fermented  foods.  Avoid  raw  foods  such  as  uncooked  salads,  sprouts  and  cold  sandwiches,  because  raw  foods  are  harder  on  the  digestive  system.  Avoid  yogurt,  as  it  once in a while  clogs  the  channels  of  the  body.  Avoid  iced  water  and  cold  beverages.  Eat  whole,  fresh,  natural  foods,  organic  if  you  may  get  it.  Buy  your  construct  fresh,  and  consume  it  quickly.  Eat  cooked  foods,  warm  or  at  room  temperature.  Drink  a large total  of  warm  water  through  the  day.</li>
<li><u>Stage  2</u>:  Following  week  add  coriander,  cumin,  fennel  and  ajwain  (carum  copticum)  teas  to  your  day-to-day  digestion-enhancing  spices  to  choose  from.  Include  a large total  of  cleansing  fruits  and  vegetables  in  your  diet.  Barley  water  or  rice  kanjee,  made  by  cooking  a  little  amount  of  grain  with  a  huge  amount  of  water  (1/2  cup  to  10  cups)  are  also  wondrous  cleansers  of  the  digestive  scheme  and  the  urinary  tract.  Greens,  daikon  radish,  bitter  gourd,  cabbage  and  celery  are  examples  of  cleansing  vegetables.  Cooked  apples  and  pears  are  a  great  way  to  get  elimination  going  in  the  morning.  Prunes,  pineapple,  papaya  and  pomegranate  are  other  fruits  that  aid  digestion  and  cleansing.  Herbs  such  as  cilantro,  mint,  fresh  ginger  and  lemon  are  likewise  helpful  for  cleansing  and  purifying  the  digestive  system.  Cook  with  digestion  enhancing,  detoxifying  spices  such  as  turmeric,  cumin,  coriander,  clove,  ajwain,  fenugreek,  dried  ginger,  Chinese  cinnamon  and  fennel.  Add  the  turmeric  to  foods  as  they  are  cooking,  and  saut&eacute;  other  spices  in  ghee  or  olive  oil  and  pour  over  prepared  dishes  for  the  best  therapeutic  benefit.</li>
</ul>
<p>Follow  Ayurvedic  guidelines  for  proper  digestion.  Eat  three  meals  a  day  at  in regards to  the  same  times,  eat  lighter  in  the  morning  and  evening  than  in  the  afternoon,  and  eat  in  a  quiet,  pleasant  atmosphere.  Get  a large total  of  rest.  Sleep  is  indispensable  any  time  of  year,  but  peculiarly  for the duration of  purification,  when  your  body  needs  the  quiet  time  to  cleanse  itself  and  recharge.  Go  to  bed  early  and  rise  early.  Meditate  everyday.  Stress  contributes  to  disrupted  digestion,  and  meditation  may  aid  reduce  stress  levels.  Exercise,  done  everyday,  is  important.  Exercise  early  in  the  morning.  Walking  is  magnificent  exercise  for  all  body  types.  Practice  deep  breathing  to  draw  in  oxygen  and  cleanse  the  air  channels  of  the  body.  Avoid  napping  for the duration of  the  day.  The  Ayurvedic  every day  massage,  called  abhyanga,  helps  loosen  toxins  deeply  embedded  in  body  tissues  for  ease  of  elimination.  If  there  is  a  day  spa  that  offers  Ayurvedic  rejuvenation  treatments  in  the  area,  treat  yourself  to  a  shirodhara-a  routine  where  a  stream  of  warm  oil  is  poured  steadily  on  the  forehead  for  30-45  minutes,  followed  by  a  scalp  massage.  The  shirodhara  is  fantasti  for  calming  the  mind  and  nervous  system  and  recharging  the  entire  physiology.  Regular  elimination  is  important.  Empty  your  bowel  and  bladder  steadily  to  flush  the  toxins  that  have  been  loosened  or  freed  from  the  tissues,  joints  and  organs  out  of  the  body  before  they  get  back  into  circulation.  At  the  next  alter  of  seasons,  carry out  the  cleansing  routine  again  to  keep  ama  out  of  the  scheme  and  to  support  natural  good  health  and  vitality  on  a  long-term  basis. You  worry  with regards to  what  you  said  to  Freddie  at  work  the  day  before,  or,  you  are  giving  yourself  a  hard  time  for  speaking  to  your  partner,  your  parent  or  your  best  friend  the  way  you  did.  You  lay  there  thinking  when it comes to  how  you  are  going  to  keep  up  with  your  commitments  and  get  everything  done  in  time.  You  lay  there  in  a  state  of  worry,  guilt,  excitement,  anger,  frustration.  Oh  dear&#8230;  the  list  goes  on.</p>

<p>One  of  the  most  powerful  forms  of  mindfulness  is  cognizance  of  sound.    We  tend  to  tune  out  the  noise  of  our  lives  in  order  to  concentrate  on  the  tasks  at  hand.</p>
<p>In  fact,  we  may  get  so  applied  to  a  peculiar  sound  that  we  don&#8217;t  observe  it  until  it&#8217;s  gone&#8211;like  a  television  that  is  turned  off,  or  traffic  that  stops  outside  your  home,  or  your  neighbor&#8217;s  lawn  mower  or  stereo  that  is  abruptly  silent.</p>
<p>We  detect  when  it  starts,  we  measuredly  shut  it  out,  and  then  detect  it  once  again  when  it  stops.</p>
<p>Everyone  who  hears  has  a  healthful  serving  of  what  is  called  musical  intelligence.    It  isn&#8217;t  fixed  to  actual  music,  however&#8211;it  is  our  acknowledgement  and  understanding  of  the  pitch,  tone,  quality,  length,  volume  and  source  of  the  sounds  around  us.</p>
<p>Now,  a good deal of  of  us  might  have  perfective  pitch,  knowing  without any delay  that  the  note  we  listen  is  a  middle  C.    Others  might  have  a  very  well-developed  sense  of  tone  quality&#8211;noting  the  divergence  among  a  middle  C  played  on  a  piano  or  a  flute,  or  even  the  same  note  sung  by  two  dissimilar  people.    And  galore  of  us  might  consider  ourselves  wholly  hopeless  as  musicians  while  having  an  encyclopedic  memory  for  song  lyrics,  guitar  riffs,  or  even  the  songs  of  birds.</p>
<p>The  outstanding  news  is  that,  no  matter  where  we  stand  on  the  music  smarts  scale,  we  each  have  the  capacity  to  increase  our  musical  intelligence.    Better  yet,  by  focusing  on  chosen  sounds  as  triggers  for  mindfulness,  we  may  sharpen  our  knowingness  and  increase  our  enjoyment  of  the  world  around  us  at  the  same  time.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s  a  little  mindfulness  game  to  aid  you  zero  in  on  sound  as  a  trigger  for  dandier  awareness:    Notice  &#8220;Hmmm.&#8221;</p>
<p>You  might  listen  someone  say  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  when  they  are  attempting  to  do not forget  something  or  attempting  to  make  a  decision.    They  might  use  it  to  show  skepticism  or  wonder,  inspiration  or  frustration.  It  might  be  low  and  long,  or  high  and  short.    It  could  be  very  soft  or  rather  loud.    Is  it  ascending  or  descending?    Is  it  aspirated?    Is  it  musical?</p>
<p>Using  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  as  a  mindfulness  cue  allows  you  to:</p>
<p>1)  Notice  a  chosen  trigger</p>
<p>2)  Take  a  moment  to  note  the  intention,  emotion,  and  sound  quality  of  that  queer  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;</p>
<p>3)  Notice  that  you  noticed</p>
<p>You  are  catching  yourself  in  the  act  of  being  mindful  while  you  are  right  smack  in  the  middle  of  the  Real  World.    This  is  the  essence  of  playing  with  mindfulness!</p>
<p>By  paying  attention  to  this  soft  exclamation,  you  may  heighten  your  consciousness  of  sound  while  also  picking  up  on  the  subtleties  of  emotion  and  expression.    It&#8217;s  a  great  way  to  use  your  ears  to  learn  more  with regards to  interpersonal  communication.  You  will  be  amazed  at  what  you  may  learn  with regards to  others&#8211;and  their  state  of  mind&#8211;by  getting  more  conscious  of  the  way  they  use  this  sound.</p>
<p>Start  noticing  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  in  conversations  around  you  as  well  as  your  own.    Then,  branch  out  and  observe  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  in  movies,  television  shows,  or  theater  presentations.</p>
<p>Finally,  tap  into  your  musical  intelligence  even  further  by  recognizing  the  sounds  that  resemble  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  in  machinery  or  nature.    Does  the  copier  sound  like  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;?    Does  your  printer  make  that  sound?    How  regarding  your  dog  when  you  scratch  it is  ears,  or  your  collaborator  sleeping  besides  you?</p>
<p>Start  hearing  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  all  around  you.    It&#8217;s  a  fun  way  to  fabricate  a  few  &#8220;Hmmm&#8221;  moments  of  your  own!</p>

For a much stronger sound therapy CD, I recommend &#8220;Say Good Night to Insomnia&#8221; by Jane Maati Smith. </p>

<p>I highly recommend it for anyone needing help falling asleep and staying asleep. If I wake up during the night, I just turn this CD on and within a few minutes I am back to sleep. <br />Check out the other CD&#8217;s in his collection, they are all wonderful!</p>
