Hands-On ReviewAs any parent of babies knows, sleep is a precious, precious commodity. Scores of books and articles have been written on the subject, and one of the introductory questions any parent will hear, after “How cute! How old? Boy or girl?” is, “Does she sleep through the night?” Babies aren’t designed to sleep through the night in their early months, but eventually, they may sleep for longer blocks of time. And this is when parents will do just in regards to anything to lengthen those snooze hours. The Sleep Sheep might just be the most effective sleep help in a parent’s tool belt. It sure is the cutest! Standing (or rather, sitting) just 11 inches tall, this cuddly lamb may be attached with Velcro strips to baby’s crib. Tucked in it is back is an audio box with four comforting sounds from nature: a heartbeat, a spring rainfall, the ocean, and whale songs. Push a button, adjust the volume, and sneak out of the nursery while the Sleep Sheep does it is job, playing a full 23 minutes of snooze-inducing sound. Did you catch that? It’s important: twenty-three minutes! So galore sound machines only play for five minutes or so. Our woolly friend knows it may take longer than that for a heap of babies to fall asleep. Beyond “White Noise”
Music may be too stimulating. The whirring of a fan may be effective, but, well, breezy. And regular house noise, peculiarly with an older sibling or too, may be distracting or downright disruptive to sleep. What babies need are relaxing, repetitious sounds. And when those sounds are housed in a huggable package, so much the better!

    Mother’s Heartbeat
What’s the firstborn sound baby hears while still in the womb? His mother’s heartbeat, of course. This steady underwater thumping is bound to reassure babies, even once they’re on “the outside.”

    Spring Showers
These spring showers may never fetch May flowers, but their snug patter may fetch hours of peaceful slumber.

    Ocean Waves
The swooshing sounds of a tame ocean surf have the power to lull just when it comes to any person to sleep.

    Whale Songs
Eerie yet harmonious, whale songs are thought to elevate mind and spirit. Even if baby doesn’t know that, the lovely distant songs provide a tranquil background to sleep.

The Sleep Sheep’s sound box is removable, so even if space is limited, baby’s comforting sleep sounds may go where she goes. A distinguishable numbered certificate of adoption is provided for those who want to make a special place in their families for their new, valuable, sure to be beloved friend. Requires 2 AA batteries (included). –Emilie Coulter

His “Sheepie” is a close companion even when the noise is not playing. We bought another one just last week to give as a baby gift, and found that they had upgraded a little. Our sleep sheep only plays 23 minutes of noise, but the newer model give you the option of the noise lasting 23 minutes or 45 minutes. That’s a nice addition, as the 23 minutes sometimes is too short. We have machine washed and dried this MANY times and it seems to be standing up to the beatings a washing machine can give a stuffed animal.

After tracking my baby’s internal sleeping schedule, I incorporated the Sheep into our nap and bedtime routine. After only two days, I’m able to lay him in his crib while he’s still awake, and he falls asleep on his own.

This has been the best sleep aid product that I’ve bought. The sounds play on a nice, long cycle. The timing was a problem with other products I tried to use. These items had an auto-shutoff at around five minutes, which was nowhere near enough time for my little one to settle. As well, I like that the Sheep has volume control.

All in all, this is a great item. I’m planning to buy one for my friends that are expecting babies.

Most of us spend our days surrounded by the sounds of vehicles, televisions, and office machines. Nature sound recordings may offer us an escape from these unnatural surroundings, and grant us to reclaim our balance. Popular sounds applied in ambient recordings are: ocean waves, creeks, waterfalls, wind, rain, thunder, and birds. Our sense of hearing may have a strong influence on our aroused health. Through experimentation, you may discover the effects each of these sounds have on your moods and emotions. Because our life experiences and environs are so diverse, each person reacts differently to the respective sounds of nature. Below are a number of mutual gains that nature sounds may offer:

- Consistent sounds, like rain or waterfalls, act like a “white noise machine” that masks household noises such as refrigerators, heaters, and creaking floors. These types of sounds often support light sleepers and infants sleep better.

- The sound of steady, rhythmic ocean waves provides a sensation of relaxation and calm. The hypnotic consistency of waves may likewise help to lull you to sleep.

- Creeks, exceptionally a slow babbling type creek, is a warm comforting sound. The gurgling sounds are distinctive and quickly conjure up images of a countryside getaway.

- Thunder may aid to mask low rumbling sounds like motorbikes, earsplitting cars, or boom boxes.

- Singing birds is a joyful sound, and may remind one of a day off at the lake or in the back yard.

- Storm sounds may aid you to relax or concentrate on work while you’re at home. When it feels like a stormy day we tend to relax, thinking that we can’t go out to work in the poor weather.

- You might associate some of the nature sounds with a pleasant experience or location. Ocean waves, creeks and waterfalls are galore of the sounds that are mutual on vacations.

Ray
I’ve suffered from varying degrees of insomnia for years. A few years ago, I created an iPod play list to help me mentally transition from my day to sleep time, but recently I was ready for something new.

I bought “Transition to Sleep” whle I was on vacation. I never sleep well away from home, so I figured this would be a real test of this CD’s effectiveness.

It probably helps that I love hand-drumming percussion, but the opening part of the 45-minute track is lovely background music. It sets a nice mood as I’m settling into bed. The music is engineered to bring the brain to a state that is ready to sleep. As the CD progresses toward the later half, the volume gets lower on its own so as not to over-stimulate or awaken the listener.

I can’t tell you what the second half of the CD sounds like because I’ve not been awake for it yet. I find that I drift off to sleep nicely and quite quickly, relatively speaking. It’s lovely! I sleep well, especially the first part of the night when I typically toss and turn and keep looking at the clock.

I was skeptical that the music could be engineered to lead the brain to deeply resting state, but this one works! Ahhh!

The drums make me nervous and anxious to the extent that I decided it might do just the opposite of what it was intended for and I brought it into work to be more productive and it works well for making me focus and work at a faster pace. When people hear it in my office they say pretty much the same thing as I did. I wouldn’t recommend it for relaxing, but if you want to anxiously twittle your pencil on the desk then this is the CD for you.

When you’re ready to go to sleep, you want your body to be ready to go to sleep, too. Insomnia rears it is ugly head when your body says, “Not yet, you idiot! I’m way too tense to sleep now.” Whether your sleep disorder is caused by personality clashes at work, a fight you just had with your spouse or sleep partner, or the mounting stack of bills that lay on your desk unpaid, it you’re too stressed to sleep, then you’re just plain too stressed!

There are any number of sleep aids available to help you get your body in the mood for sleep. Over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications, and assorted treatments and therapy are available for you to choose from. One of the natural sleep aids highly worth thoughtfulness is music to support you sleep.

Underlying Theory

If you’re tense, muscles tight, jaw clenched in anger, or fingers clenched in worry, then you’re in no condition to lie down and drift off peacefully to sleep. And you in all probability recognise it, too. Anything you may do to calm down and relax; anything you may do to set isolated your worries and distractions; anything, in short, which calms your mind, body, and spirit will aid you achieve the levels of sleep that rejuvenate your body and restore your mind.

You will have to take note, too, that using music as a natural sleep aid will not leave you with a dangerous addiction to either over-the-counter or prescription medications. And if you find yourself addicted to 45 minutes of music before bed, you in all likelihood won’t even think of it as an addiction — just a pleasant interlude the precedes your pleasant night of rest.

Why Music?

Well, for one thing, you in all probability have music on hand which has a personal, calming, happy memory for you. Jazz, rock, country, or bagpipes, if it has a calming effect on you, then it may be just the thing to listen to before bed.

Research has shown that your sense of relaxation and calmness may be significantly increased through the use of relaxing music for 45 minutes or so before you go to bed. Children tend to do best with gentle, lulling music. Adults, on the other hand, differ widely in terms of what music stimulates and what music calms them. The mystery in using music to support you sleep seems to lie in seeking to find just which arrangements work best for you.

Alternatively, you may find it most relaxing to spend some of your pre-bedtime minutes creating music rather than listening to it. You may find yourself composing gentle, relaxing melodies that calm you down. Or, helpful for some, you may find that creating highly stimulating — even angry — sounds will support you release the emotions troubling you and keeping you awake.

In addition to helping you get to sleep faster, music before bedtime has likewise been shown to result in a better quality of sleep — deeper REM sleep and, consequently, a dandier sense of sentiment altogether restored when rising the next morning.

There are any number of sleep aids available to aid you get your body in the mood for sleep. Over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications, and various treatments and therapy are available for you to choose from. One of the natural sleep aids highly worth contemplation is music to help you sleep.

Underlying Theory

If you’re tense, muscles tight, jaw clenched in anger, or fingers clenched in worry, then you’re in no condition to lie down and drift off peacefully to sleep. And you probably know it, too. Anything you may do to calm down and relax; anything you may do to set detached your worries and distractions; anything, in short, which calms your mind, body, and spirit will help you achieve the levels of sleep that rejuvenate your body and restore your mind.

You must take note, too, that using music as a natural sleep aid will not leave you with a dangerous addiction to either over-the-counter or prescription medications. And if you find yourself addicted to 45 minutes of music before bed, you in all likelihood won’t even think of it as an addiction — just a pleasant interlude the precedes your pleasant night of rest.

Why Music?

Well, for one thing, you probably have music on hand which has a personal, calming, happy memory for you.

The mystery in using music to help you sleep seems to lie in seeking to find just which arrangements work best for you.

Alternatively, you may find it most relaxing to spend a heap of of your pre-bedtime minutes creating music rather than listening to it. You may find yourself composing gentle, relaxing melodies that calm you down. Or, helpful for some, you may find that creating highly stimulating — even angry — sounds will support you release the emotions troubling you and keeping you awake.

In addition to helping you get to sleep faster, music before bedtime has likewise been shown to result in a better quality of sleep — deeper REM sleep and, consequently, a more outstanding sense of sentiment exclusively restored when rising the next morning.

124 of 132 people found the following review helpful.
Wonderful idea…but imperfectly executed
By Victorian house renovator
This item is a WONDERFUL idea, and the on-the-go model is the perfect size for home (I don’t know who would need the size of the original, larger sleep sheep – it’s enormous) and travel, but it has two key flaws:

1) there isn’t a continuous play mode!! There are only two timed options, then the sound turns off. My newborn needed the sound maintained continuously to STAY asleep, not just to FALL asleep. Thus, we would have to keep pressing the button over and over, waking up ourselves when the sound would turn off to keep her from waking up – beyond annoying.

2) the travel (“on-the-go”) model does not have the heartbeat sound like the full size model does – why? Otherwise, the sounds are the same as the full size model (waves, rain and whales). As the heartbeat is a KEY sound to have for a newborn, why on earth would THAT be the sound they substituted out on the travel model for a redundant “gentle stream” sound (could it be to get you to buy both sizes?!?)?

I gave it two stars because everything else is so wonderful and it has so much potential to be a fabulous product:

–the sheep is adorable, soft, and it is great to be able to hang it from ANYWHERE with the velcro loop. Plus, it is battery operated, which is a huge blessing (batteries are pre-installed, and are very long lasting – we did not replace ours over three+ months of use).

–the way the sound “machine” is removable from the body of the sheep is ingenious. This way, you can wash the sheep and reinsert the machine when dry.

–LOVE the volume control: it’s a dial, so you have complete control (not just low and high like so many children’s products today).

–The rain sound is the closest to generic “white noise.”

This product would be perfect with the 1) heartbeat sound in lieu of the ‘gentle stream’, which is redundant to the rain, imo, and 2)a continuous play mode.

Due to this, you are better off with Brookstones sound machine, which has not only timed settings, but continuous play, AND all the sounds you really need: heartbeat, in-utero (weird sloshing sound with “glub-glubs”), white noise, automobile and more. It’s not cute and plush (and you have to plug it in w/ battery backup), but is WORKS.

51 of 55 people found the following review helpful.
Essential for a “happiest baby”
By Cherelle
For any parent who is raising a baby using gentle Happiest Baby on the Block soothing methods this “Sleepy Sheep” is a lifesaver. Babies really do respond to swaddling, being on their sides or stomachs, jiggling and “shush-ing” noise. We have used all of the white noises on this sheep and they all work to various degrees. We found the ocean sound to be closest to a parent “shssssh/shush” with breaths in between. Rather than shssssssh your lips off till your throat is bone dry, this Sheep does lots of the work for you and can be adjusted in volume for any ambient noise. Great item and did wonders for our little one’s “4th trimester” She switches off like a light now when she recognizes the preparation and sheep sounds! Every new parent with a fussy baby should have this as a tool along with the Happiest Baby DVD!!! Great Item.

I wanted something that was easy to turn on and off that could be kept by the crib. He loves his sleep sheep! He has even figured out how to turn the sounds on himself. It has 2 timer settings and four sounds. It is also very soft. I would definitely recommend it.

One of the most powerful forms of mindfulness is cognizance of sound. We tend to tune out the noise of our lives in order to concentrate on the tasks at hand.

In fact, we may get so applied to a peculiar sound that we don’t observe it until it’s gone–like a television that is turned off, or traffic that stops outside your home, or your neighbor’s lawn mower or stereo that is abruptly silent.

We detect when it starts, we measuredly shut it out, and then detect it once again when it stops.

Everyone who hears has a healthful serving of what is called musical intelligence. It isn’t fixed to actual music, however–it is our acknowledgement and understanding of the pitch, tone, quality, length, volume and source of the sounds around us.

Now, a good deal of of us might have perfective pitch, knowing without any delay that the note we listen is a middle C. Others might have a very well-developed sense of tone quality–noting the divergence among a middle C played on a piano or a flute, or even the same note sung by two dissimilar people. And galore of us might consider ourselves wholly hopeless as musicians while having an encyclopedic memory for song lyrics, guitar riffs, or even the songs of birds.

The outstanding news is that, no matter where we stand on the music smarts scale, we each have the capacity to increase our musical intelligence. Better yet, by focusing on chosen sounds as triggers for mindfulness, we may sharpen our knowingness and increase our enjoyment of the world around us at the same time.

Here’s a little mindfulness game to aid you zero in on sound as a trigger for dandier awareness: Notice “Hmmm.”

You might listen someone say “Hmmm” when they are attempting to do not forget something or attempting to make a decision. They might use it to show skepticism or wonder, inspiration or frustration. It might be low and long, or high and short. It could be very soft or rather loud. Is it ascending or descending? Is it aspirated? Is it musical?

Using “Hmmm” as a mindfulness cue allows you to:

1) Notice a chosen trigger

2) Take a moment to note the intention, emotion, and sound quality of that queer “Hmmm”

3) Notice that you noticed

You are catching yourself in the act of being mindful while you are right smack in the middle of the Real World. This is the essence of playing with mindfulness!

By paying attention to this soft exclamation, you may heighten your consciousness of sound while also picking up on the subtleties of emotion and expression. It’s a great way to use your ears to learn more with regards to interpersonal communication. You will be amazed at what you may learn with regards to others–and their state of mind–by getting more conscious of the way they use this sound.

Start noticing “Hmmm” in conversations around you as well as your own. Then, branch out and observe “Hmmm” in movies, television shows, or theater presentations.

Finally, tap into your musical intelligence even further by recognizing the sounds that resemble “Hmmm” in machinery or nature. Does the copier sound like “Hmmm”? Does your printer make that sound? How regarding your dog when you scratch it is ears, or your collaborator sleeping besides you?

Start hearing “Hmmm” all around you. It’s a fun way to fabricate a few “Hmmm” moments of your own!

Maybe it’s the “inaudible pulses of sound.” Jeffrey Thompson’s systems incorporate, or perhaps I’ve just conditioned myself to relax when I hear it. Whatever the reason, it soothes me, and helps our daughter nap too.

But for those who truly struggle with insomnia, this is not strong enough of a sound therapy CD for inducing sleep. Dr. Thompson’s other CD: Delta Sleep Solution: Sleepy Rain might be a better fit. For a much stronger sound therapy CD, I recommend “Say Good Night to Insomnia” by Jane Maati Smith.

Sauls
I love this CD! I purchased it on a whim, I was looking for something to help me sleep. It does help with sleep and so much more. It also works great for relaxing and meditating. The music is soothing and unobstrusive. You will find yourself able to fall asleep quicker and have a deeper more regenerative sleep. This is exactly what I needed.

I highly recommend it for anyone needing help falling asleep and staying asleep. If I wake up during the night, I just turn this CD on and within a few minutes I am back to sleep.
Check out the other CD’s in his collection, they are all wonderful!

How do you choose the relaxation music that works best? You may surely get started by experimenting with numerous dissimilar types. After all, it seems likely that what one person finds relaxing another will find irritating. But is it all just a matter of personal preference?

Actually no. Though ones personal tastes enter into the equation, there are reasons that some types of music are more relaxing than others. For example, both science and the experience of some persons point to the usefulness of baroque music for relaxation. Studies have shown that baroque music at 60 beats per minute causes your brain to give rise to more alpha brainwaves. Why does that matter? More on that in a moment. For now, here are some specific examples of good relaxation music.

“Harpsichord Concerto in F Minor,” by J.S. Bach

“Concerto No.10 in F Major from Twelve Concerti Grossi,” by A. Corelli

“Winter” from “The Four Seasons,” by A. Vivaldi

“Canon in D,” by Pachelbel

“Adagio in G Minor for Strings,” by Albinoni

Often it’s just a passage from these that has the most relaxing effect. In the original three examples above, the movements referred to as “largo” work best.

What other types of music support humans relax? Light jazz (try Luther Vandross) works for some. Eastern music, like that which uses the Indian Sitar, is another bestloved (try Ravi Shankar). Generic easy listening music with sounds of nature mixed in is a mutual choice as well.

Any of the music in these examples is comparatively inexpensive. Even the best “sounds of nature” and “easy listening” relaxation CDs are normally no more than twenty-five dollars. However, if you’re more than willing to spend a bit more, there is a more scientific approach to using relaxation music.

Altering Your Brainwaves

Some types of music work better than others because of what they do to our brainwaves. Our brains principally give rise to brainwaves at 14 – 30 hertz (cycles-per-second) for the duration of normal waking consciousness. In this frequency range they are referred to as “beta” waves. Frequencies from 8 – 14 hertz are “alpha” waves, which are present when we are more relaxed. Around 4 – 8 hertz is the “theta” range, accompanied by a deeper meditative or drowsy state. Finally, for the duration of deep sleep delta waves (below 5 hertz) are produced.

Meditation stimulates the more relaxing states of knowingness peculiarly if it is regularly practiced. The good news, if you don’t have the time nor inclination to meditate, is that music which has been embedded with sure beats works in the same way. This is the basis for the most recent brainwave entrainment technologies, based on decades of research. Simply listen to these CDs or MP3s with headphones and they alter your brainwaves, causing a quick relaxation response.

In other words, if you’re more than willing to spend a little more, you get unfeigned relaxation technology. Also, these productions in general have pleasant music for a background too (though numerous use rain or wave sounds). That makes them the best kind of relaxation music in my experience.
